Power Boat Organizations by Cecil Brumley
To become a serious power boat owner, one step to consider is to join a boating organization.
That doesn't mean you have to join a yacht club and wear one of those captain's hats. There are several power boat groups that provide members with many benefits and also help communities throughout the world.
Here's a quick look at some of the largest boating organizations:
American Boat Association: A fairly new group, the ABA was formed in 1997. It offers benefits and discounts to members, and even some to non-members. The group promotes boating safety, affordability and a clean environment. Benefits include discounted insurance, low interest rate financing, boat appraisals, product discounts, assistance with repair and maintenance, a subscription to Boating Life magazine, and a hat. A one-year membership is free to anyone using select programs offered by the association.
BoatU.S. is more commercial than most organizations, offering a towing service, boat financing, marine insurance, equipment, travel services, yacht charters and marina discounts.
BoatU.S. is a top lobbying group for recreational boaters and also provides information and assistance with government affairs. It also has the Clean Water Trust, Fish Tag & Release Program and Trailering Club.
While not a direct membership organization, the National Safe Boating Council, founded in 1958, has a membership of more than 300 organizations interested in safe boating in the U.S. and Canada. The groups are 65 percent non-profits and 35% for-profit enterprises. The council conducts national campaigns to promote boating safety. It helps train boating safety educators and distributes information on safe boating. It also supports research on boating safety and awareness.
U.S. Power Squadrons: One of the oldest boating organizations in the United States, the Power Squadrons were organized in 1914. It has about 60,000 members in 450 squadrons across the nation and in some U.S. territories. It also is dedicated to safer boating and provides classes on seamanship, navigation and other subjects. Its members are active in their communities and provide information to schools, churches and others. It is the world's largest non-profit boating group and has been honored by three U.S. presidents for its contributions.
By joining an organization you can get assistance in making sure you are operating your power boat in the best manner possible. You also can enjoy the camaraderie of other power boat owners and trade information that can be valuable to you in the future.
