U S Passport Renewal - Advice For Renewing A Passport By Snail Mail Or In Person
The process for passports renewal can be completed through the mail by following the included steps below. In some cases, the passport will need to be renewed in person and so the information below will reflect both processes. Extenuating circumstances will warrant the need to apply in person rather than the mail option.
How To Apply
A person can apply for a renewed passport via mail if and only if they fall into all of the categories below. First, a previous passport that is not damaged in any way is required and secondly, the person has to have been issued the first passport after the age of 16. Third, the passport has to have been issued within the last 15 years and last but not least, the passport must be in the legal name of the person. If not, documentation showing the name change is required. I feel that online passports is the way to go.
DS-82 Form
For individuals who are not US residents but hold a previous passport and are eligible for the DS-82 form, they can submit their application by mail. This can be done even if it is the first US passport that the person has ever applied for. All submissions need to be sent in a manila envelope that will fit the paperwork without bending it and should be sent via certified mail for tracking reasons.
US Citizens In Canada
US citizens residing in Canada are also eligible to send their application in via mail to the address on the form. By using the envelope and certified mail option, the documentation is secure from the time it leaves to the time it arrives. Having security is very important when transporting sensitive materials such as these.
US Citizens Abroad
If a person is residing outside the United States or Canada, they should visit their nearest embassy to obtain a new passport. US citizens residing in Canada may submit their form via mail and they must mail the documents to the address listed on the DS-82 form. Individuals who are behind in their child support payments may be unable to obtain a passport and will be required to submit additional documentation.
DS-11 Form
Applying in person requires the individual to fill out a DS-11 form and not sign it until they have their meeting with the acceptance agent. During the meeting, the agent will announce when it is time to sign the documentation. In addition to the form, a social security number is required and individuals who cannot supply one or refuse to supply one will be denied a passport.
Required Documents
Proof of US citizenship in the form of a birth certificate or documentation from the department of immigration is also required. All of the documentation proving citizenship is returned to the person along with their new passport card. The renewed passport and all supporting documentation is mailed to the individual when it is complete.
The system that is designed for pasport renewal is in place to protect the individuals applying along with the authorities in charge. As long as the rules are followed, a person can obtain their renewed passport with no problem at all. One thing to remember is if the passport is needed right away, the applicant must renew it in person. I feel that online U.S. passports is the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions...
United States Air Force Academy Medical Disqualifications Help?
I am applying to USAFA and I had a question about medical disqualifications. My heart beat skips every so often and is does not affect my daily life in any way. I also sometimes get racing heart beats. Once again this does not affect my daily life. Would these two small things prevent me from being admitted into the academy or becoming a pilot? Also, I read that if you have allergies like hay fever you will not be able to become a Pilot in the Air Force. Is this true? Thanks for the responses.
Answer:
Ahhh.... right up my alley!!! I was a Aeromedical Technician in the Air Force from 1989-1997. Unless things have changed (and they always do), Heart murmur is a disqualifying defect for UPT. (undergraduate pilot training) Hay fever? not likely, unless it was chronic. You can apply for a "medical waiver". What they will want is a complete workup of your heart. Your family physician will have to run the tests. The Physical Examination and Standards department will take these studies and either grant you a waiver, or disqualify you.
