Ghost Towns Established Globally
Abandoned places hold a certain intrigue that many have picked up on. Ghost towns have been showing up in video games, novels, and other media, and there's something about them that just makes them interesting. Maybe it's the lack of human life, or stand-still after an abrupt departure. Maybe it's the history surrounding the absence of people. Maybe it's the possibility of ghosts or other strange phenomena. Whatever it is, people have been traveling to and exploring abandoned places for a long time. There are definitely some interesting ones in the world for those looking to experience the ultimate ghost town. These international locations require that you get a USA Passport, however.
Getting a passport is much easier when done online. From passport expediting service sites, you can access all sorts of passport services that make traveling anywhere much easier. For example, you can apply for a replacement pasport right from your computer. After you've submitted your application for that, you are able to decide when you'd like to have your passport by. That's right: no more waiting around hoping your passport arrives in time for your big trip.
One very interesting ghost town is Varosha, which can be found in Cyprus. 40 years ago in the 1970's, Varosha was a very well-known and frequented vacation destination. All sorts of people frequented Varosha, including several big-name celebrities. Eventually, the residents had to flee because the invasion by the Turks, and it has stayed empty ever since. Everything is slowly decaying and falling apart and nature is reclaiming the city. If you happen to wander into a car dealership, you'll see that there are still 1974 vehicle models on display.
Off the coast of Japan is an island known as "Battleship Island." The island's official name is Hashima, and it was once a very integral part in the industrialization of Japan. The island was constructed to mine the coal that was located in underwater coal deposits. Working and living on the island was a crowded experience; the island has one of the highest recorded population densities in the world. Many of the people who worked and lived there were forced to do so. However, with the emergence of petroleum as the principle fuel source, Japan's coal mine's started to go out of commission, Hashima included. The island isn't able to be explored yet, but officials are working on making it so.
Balestrino, Italy is a ghost town shrouded in mystery. No one really knows when it was constructed, but it is clear that the city is very old. Medieval buildings are still standing, including an impressive castle perched on a hilltop. There is still evidence of old olive farms, and even the more modern buildings look worn. The ancient walled city was abandoned due to a large number of earthquakes which hit the area in the late 19th century. Earthquakes aren't uncommon in the region, and one bad earthquake means this city could be gone forever any day now.
Ghost town visits can definitely spice up a boring vacation. If you are traveling anywhere in the world, it's likely a ghost town might be nearby. Do a little research and see if you can't squeeze it into your itinerary. Before you do though, be sure to get a passport fast. Online passport services make getting a new or replacement pasport unbelievably easy.
