How to Join SASS by Dona Rosa
The Single Action Shooting Society, short for S.A.S.S. mainly works towards maintaining the popularity of Cowboy Action Shooting to prevent the old Wild West shooting sport from dying out. To learn more, read on.
Functions of SAAS
The functions of the S.A.S.S. are simple. The society hosts regular matches across various western regions of the country. It also takes care of the end of train World Championship matches every year. The members are requested to maintain a certain code and discipline as part of the society in return for which the society makes sure that their rights are protected according to those declared by the 2nd Amendment.
Characters and the Game
Each member is expected to imitate a character or a profession that was popular back in the old days in the Wild West. Each member's character should be different from the other. The costumes are designed according to this criterion so that individuality is maintained. Most players and their family are more enthusiastic about this costume designing than the actual sport.
Players use old artilleries like the one shot revolvers, pistol caliber levers, shotguns and action rifles. The entire gaming process is kept identical to that of the Old Wild West. Players usually fight to win honor and glory over their "enemies".
The Code of Conduct
Since this is a sport that is played mainly to remember how things were back in the old days, members and players are expected to maintain the old Spirit of Sportsmanship, which mainly demands them to be sporting enough to do whatever the game asks them to. There is no place for reservations in this sport.
Players are expected to wear their designer costumes and act the character they are portraying. This is what keeps the spirit of the game alive even after hundreds of years.
SASS Shooting on a Horse
The Single Action Shooting Society game is one of the most popular and well indulged sports of the country. It is an equestrian game that is dynamic and alive in spirit contributed by the members. The player basically rides on a horse that weighs nearly 1200 pounds with shots out of six guns. He races across a field that has tracks of blazing fire on it.
This is known as mounted shooting in the SASS. It is a reminder of the ways in which such shooting acts used to take place in the earlier days. It also includes other authentic elements of that time to make it look and feel more real. This involves barrel racing, reigning and other such acts that are common in equestrian games.
All this is done using two single action revolvers of.45 caliber containing 5 rounds of black powder shots. These are meant to shoot t10 balloons that are put up on a "stage" in the design of an Old Wild West setting.
The rider races across the timing beam and shoots these balloons, five shots at a time, and then puts it back in the western gun holsters. He then goes on to continue with the remaining shots with the other revolver. The timing includes penalties such as missing shots or dropping the gun. Based on the fastest time, the player wins or loses.
