Six Ballroom Dances For Beginners
Ballroom dancing is an elegant art form with some styles spanning back hundreds of years. Today ballroom dance is regaining it's popularity with the American people partly because of main stream network TV shows showcasing dances such as the Waltz, FoxTrot and Tango.
I will look at the six most popular styles of dance for the American ballroom and shed a little light on their history as well.
The Waltz
Said to have originated in the 1830's from a German Golf dance, the Waltz is the oldest style of Ballroom dancing. The first version of the Waltz was known as the Waltzer and is said to have been one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite dances. This is still a very elegant and beautiful dance especially done in formal settings.
The Tango
A younger dance then the Waltz the tango originated from Argentina, so is often referred to as the Argentine Tango. This dance gained it's popularity with Europeans around the early 1900's just before the first world war. It is a very exotic dance said to get it's start in the Ghetto of Buenos Aires. More structured, the American Tango is based on the more expressive Argentine Tango.
The Swing
There are several styles to the swing. The standards are the east and west coast swing. Generally when you think swing it's a style more so then an exact dance that first became popular in the 1920's. There are a variety of sing styles taught in classes in dance studios, but the most popular in the ballroom is the easy coast swing.
The Rhumba
Originating as a mix mash of several Cuban dances it's been danced in American ballrooms since about the second world war. When dancing you'll notice the hip motion which has stuck from it's cuban roots and is the most exotic part of the steps.
The Cha Cha
The Cha Cha finds it's roots in Haiti and other west indies nations. As a close relative to the Mambo it has latin origins and was first introduced to the United States around 1954. Ever since it's been a staple style of the ballroom.
The FoxTrot
The smoothest style which spans the most area on the dance floor of all ballroom dances. Developed by a many named Henry Fox and his dancing act in 1914 in New York city the FoxTrot bares his name. It was one of the first dances where partners danced closer and ragtime music was being incorporated into the ballroom. You'll see the Foxtrot danced often at weddings as a favorite of couples for their first dance as a couple.
So how about it? Would you like to learn some of these dances? if so you could get started with a Ballroom dance dvd to get started. These home study programs are a great way to introduce you to the world of ballroom dance and decide if you enjoy it or not.
