Museums of Portland by Kevinchirs

In every big city of the world there are different types of museums that have the collection of the heritage of that region. Almost there are every type of things present in the museums. The Portland Museum of Art is in Maine. It has the most precious and worth seeing pieces of art that have been preserved for the people to look and know about there culture. This museum was established in 1882 by the society named Portland Society of Art in the Downtown area of the city. Initially there was enough room for exhibitions but 1908 a lady donated her mansion to museum and created a big museum with more room to collect art pieces. It was opened as a part of museum in 1911. In 1976 the museum was donated a large amount of money along with some master pieces of art. After that a rapid expansion took place due to the addition of the Homers paintings.

It has a vast collection of art pieces from all around the world. According to a survey there are approximately 17000 art pieces, this collection consist of the art from the 18th century to the present time. Healthy additions are being done in it. It is the only museum in United States that has the largest collection of European art. The collections in the museum are of Wilson Homer, Marsden, Hartley, John Martin, Louise Nevelson. The European collection consists of the work of Edgar Degas, Rene Magritte, Claude Monet, Edward Munch and many more. The building is the combine mixture of three centuries and is worth seeing.

The second most important museum is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. It was founded in 1903. At start the artifacts were displayed here. Long after that it was decided by the authorities to change it into a museum of science and industry. So in 1949 a building was bought for this purpose and the museum was set up. Then time to time expansions were done to increase the capacity of visitors. More and more attractive things were placed in the museum like planetarium. Now at present time Oregon Museum of Science and Industry have four different types of specialized halls, a planetarium and a submarine exhibit for the people. The submarine exhibit was included after the purchase of USS Blueback (SS-581) in 1994. The submarine is open for public visitors and tours. The hall that is used for the exhibition of some special things is called Featured Exhibit Hall. It exhibits things from the museum or that are brought to exhibit from all around the world.

The science hall is called Turbine Hall due to a turbine. This hall exhibits all the science stuff related to physics, chemistry, space and engineering. This hall has two parts, one is purely dedicated to physics and other is the other science exhibit area. The third hall is about biology and called the Life Science Hall. It is on the second floor. The science playground and the planetarium are also worth seeing.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How can you DEBATE the explosion of USS Maine during Spanish-American War? Pro side?

Pro side of the debate that

Explosion of USS Maine was caused by Spain

--- So far i have that the ship was sent to Spain to protect American interest and Spain wasupset

--- for the oppenet they could say that there was a technical problem of hte boat and thats a better reason

what else

THANKS

Answer:

The Maine was sent to Cuba... not Spain.

In a debate like this you will have to throw reason aside and go for a more "Spain hates us and we just KNOW they did it" attitude.

In all truthfulness, the explosion was a total accident. Reports from the wreckage explain how that it was an accident. The key is U.S. citizens, during this time, did not want to believe it was an accident because they were already so upset about the treatment of Cubans and Yellow Journalism had them frothing at the mouth for war.

It will be difficult to use the argument that the Maine was sent to protect American interests from the Spanish. The Cubans had destroyed American property and crops in an attempt to get US involvement in their revolution.

Go back over your textbook/notes on the Spanish American War one more time and think with a "biased" attitude toward both sides. The arguments will be much easier. :)

Hope this helps you.
