Army National Guard Officer First Lieutenant 1LT Promotions by Charles Holmes
In the Army National Guard, Second Lieutenants spend 18 months in that rank and are then promoted to First Lieutenant. First Lieutenant Promotions are automatic. Normally, the LT's Company Commander simply fills out some paperwork and submits it to battalion. That paperwork is then submitted up the chain-of-command and ends up at National Guard Bureau.
Most Second Lieutenants get promoted to First Lieutenant. In my fifteen years of military experience, I've never known a 2LT who didn't get picked up to promotion for 1LT. It might happen sometimes, but it's very uncommon. Instances that might keep someone from getting promoted include murder, DUI, getting your Soldiers killed or something extreme and horribly bad.
If the First Lieutenant Promotion paperwork has been submitted on time, the LT normally pins on his 1LT rank insignia on the 18th month of service. On that day, he or she is expected to host a promotion party. At a minimum, the Lieutenant should provide refreshments and beverages for their guests. Also, they should give their gold Lieutenant bar to someone they feel worthy of being an officer.
If you are currently a 2LT, you should be proactive about your promotion. At about 14-15 months of service you should "remind" your Company Commander that you will be eligible for promotion soon. If possible, you should print out the paperwork that he or she needs to submit and give it to him. That way, you make their life easier and your paperwork gets in on time.
Furthermore, you do not need the Officer Basic Course or Basic Officer Leaders Course to get promoted to First Lieutenant, but you should get it done anyway. After all, you will need these courses for promotion to Captain. In addition, if you don't have your Bachelors Degree yet, get it done. This will also keep you from getting promoted to Captain. Finally, make sure your Height Weight Test and Army Physical Fitness test are up to date, with a passing score.
In conclusion, First Lieutenant Promotions are easy to do. It's automatic. The secret to success is to be proactive and follow up with your chain-of-command. In addition, you should stay in shape and be good at what you do. You should strive to be so squared away that your Company Commander and Battalion Commander want to see you promoted. Currently, First Lieutenants spend 24 months as a First Lieutenant before they are promoted to Captain.
